The unique, patent-protected process of Saltware brings to life industrial residue from the Dead Sea, turning it into a soulful and meaningful designs.

Meet Lia Bruce, who launched Saltware Design in 2021 after completing a master’s degree in Industrial Design at Jerusalem’s prestigious Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. Born and bred in Israel, Lia now resides in Hadar Am, a moshav in Central Israel named after the citrus trees that surround it. Her inspiration is wide-ranging, from Japanese art philosophy and the Dead Sea to memories of her grandmother, who sewed salt into small cotton bags to be worn as protective amulets. Salt plays a central part in Lia’s work; her candlesticks and menorot are 100% made with Israeli salt, embellished with pure earth powders and mixed metals.

Lia persevered with Saltware Design through the pandemic, her husband’s death, and the Israel-Gaza war — but it hasn’t been easy. “After October 7th I was absolutely depressed,” she shared. The lack of tourism has significantly impacted her sales, and the local market is low, too; “People don’t have the time, money, or desire to shop.”

In testament to her drive and passion, Lia continues to create, limiting her news and social media consumption to stay focussed.

Hanukkah holds special significance for Lia. Her brother’s birthday always fell on the holiday, and her extended family gathered to celebrate. “Since I was the little one,” said Lia, “my aunties always bought me a small present, too.” This Hanukkah, we hope you and your loved ones will find joy in Lia’s hand-made creations.
