Meet sisters Aliya and Shaendl, owners of Citrus & Salt, a multi-faceted Tel Aviv-based cooking studio. Originally from Berkeley, California, Aliya began the business from her tiny Tel Aviv kitchen in 2016. Little did she know it would blossom into a studio, community space for immigrants, and, more recently, Citizen’s Kitchen — a war kitchen that’s provided over 100,000 meals to soldiers, hostage families, reserve duty families, and the injured.

“I have had to harness my resilience to lead over 3,000 volunteers this year along with my sister,” shared Aliya. “Together, we have focused on doing whatever is necessary to help give comfort through food while keeping the business afloat.”

The sisters hope that their online Israeli cooking course — filmed just before the war began — can connect those who can’t currently make it to Israel to the flavors, history, and spirit of the Israeli kitchen, and support their studio from afar in these difficult times. “We're very proud of our cooking courses and really love teaching Israeli food. Can't wait to see you in the kitchen!”

“We used to make a big deal of Hanukkah at my house… proudly displaying the 20 menorahs that my parents had collected and we had made in school in our big living room window for the world to see,” said Aliya. We hope you’ll feel proud to display your menorah this year, too — and whip up some of the recipes from Citrus & Salt’s cooking course for your holiday celebrations. Their famous crisp-on-the-outside, juicy-in-the-middle schnitzel is perfect for Hanukkah.
